Port Road is the defining feature out west. It is wide, fast, carries freight, and the service roads either side create merge and exit decisions that catch out drivers who have only ever used ordinary arterials. Getting comfortable there is worth several lessons on its own.

Behind it, the older residential grid around Findon, Seaton and Woodville has a great many unmarked intersections. There are no signs and no lines, so the give way to the right rule is the only thing keeping order, and it is the rule overseas drivers most often have never used.

West Lakes and Henley Beach bring beachfront parking, angle bays and summer pedestrian traffic. Port Adelaide adds heavy vehicles, rail crossings and the bridges. It is an honest mix, and it makes a well rounded driver.
