The north is where speed and distance judgement get built. Main North Road and the Northern Expressway carry real traffic at real speed, and merging into it is a very different task from pulling out of a side street in Prospect. Learners who have only driven quiet streets tend to hesitate here, and hesitation in a merge is its own hazard.
Mawson Lakes is the counterweight. The estate roads are full of roundabouts, tight radii and lane markings that change as you go, which forces the lane discipline the test marks you on. It is one of the most useful teaching areas in the metro.
Salisbury and Elizabeth bring shopping centre car parks, bus interchanges and school zones, which is where the 25 km/h and 40 km/h rules stop being theory. Modbury and Tea Tree Gully sit at the eastern edge of this run and start introducing gradient.
Mawson Lakes is one of the most useful places in Adelaide to learn, and that is not a compliment to the road design. The estate was built with roundabouts almost everywhere, many of them small, several of them multi lane, and a good number with lane markings that change between the approach and the exit. Learners who can handle those roundabouts can handle most of the metro area.
Lessons in Mawson LakesSalisbury gives you the full range in a small radius. Main North Road runs through it at speed, the interchange puts buses and pedestrians into the mix, and the residential streets behind are quiet enough for a first lesson.
Lessons in SalisburyModbury is where the northern suburbs start to tilt. The ground rises toward Tea Tree Gully and the foothills, so this is a natural place to practise hill starts and parking on a gradient without driving all the way into the hills.
