Refresher

Refresher driving lessons for anyone.

For licensed drivers who have had a break, lost confidence, or never felt comfortable in traffic. No judgement, and no assumption that you should already be fine.

People come back to driving for all sorts of reasons and after all sorts of gaps. Some have not driven since they got their licence. Some had a near miss and have avoided the car since. Some have driven for years but never on a motorway or through the city, and have quietly built their whole life around avoiding both.

None of that is unusual and none of it is a reason to be embarrassed. Driving anxiety is common and it responds well to structure: small steps, in a car with a second brake, with someone calm in the passenger seat who is not related to you.

Lessons go at your pace. If that means the first one is spent in quiet streets, the first one is spent in quiet streets.

What the lessons cover.

Getting comfortable again

Quiet streets first, building up only when you are ready. There is no schedule you are behind on.

The situations you avoid

Whatever they are. Right turns across traffic, roundabouts, merging, multi-storey car parks, the CBD grid. We go and do them, repeatedly, until they are ordinary.

City and highway traffic

Adelaide CBD one way pairs, tram crossings and cyclists, then arterial merges at speed. Two very different skills, both learnable.

Habits worth correcting

Long-held licence holders pick things up. An honest outside eye is the fastest way to find them.

How it runs.

  1. Say what you are avoiding. Be specific if you can. It is the fastest way to make the first lesson useful, and nothing you say will be a surprise.
  2. Start small. Quiet streets, a dual-control car, and no pressure to prove anything. Confidence comes from repetition, not from being pushed.
  3. Build up deliberately. Each lesson adds one thing. You choose the pace, and going back a step when a day is not going well is fine.
  4. Drive where you want to drive. The point is not passing anything. It is being able to go where you need to go without dreading it.

Guides worth reading first.
