Manoeuvre guide

Reverse Parallel Park

Backing into a space at the kerb

Taught in Adelaide since 2007 · Updated

Take it slowly and keep looking around the whole time.

  1. Pull up level with the car in front, about 1 metre out. Mirror, signal left, blind spot.
  2. Select reverse. Check all around, especially over your left shoulder and for pedestrians.
  3. Reverse slowly, turning the wheel to the left as the back of the car comes toward the kerb.
  4. At about 45 degrees, straighten the wheels and keep reversing, watching the kerb.
  5. Turn the wheel to the right to bring the front of the car in.
  6. Straighten up and finish within 300mm of the kerb, parallel and centred. Secure the car.

Learn this one in the car.

Reading it helps. Doing it with someone watching, in a car with a second brake, is what makes it stick.
